I use suspend2 myself, and vastly prefer it to the software suspend that 
comes with the default kernel.  I made the mistake of using "swsusp" as 
shorthand for "software suspend", which I meant to include both the 
kernel swsusp and suspend2.

suspend2 works on all three of the laptops that are running in my house 
at the moment, and is very stable.  I have one laptop that I suspend 
two to three times a day on a regular basis.  The only configuration 
option I changed in the hibernate script for any of these was to list 
the network interfaces that I wanted to stop/restart.
