I think it can be usefull on desktops too. There could be reasons to 
quickly turn off your computer but without having to shutdown all apps 
and activity going on. You could hibernate the computer in the middle of 
a kernel compilation and then continue the next day. Reasons to wanting 
to shutdown the computer could be that you want to listen to a soft 
record and don't want to hear the computer fans, or you look out of the 
window and see that a thunderstorm is coming and you want to plug all 
cables out to not toast your motherboard. =)
