Yes.

Not really. You may want to install the latest version of Freshen,
though.

There are known issues with upgrading Glibc on Gobo. The new glibc
installation causes ABI breakage for programs that the scripts need
to continue running properly. The order you have looks right to me.

For a big list of packages that are out of date on your system, you
can type Freshen. Freshen can also semi-automatically update all
those packages, too. See Freshen --help for more information.
As Lucas mentioned, you don't actually /need/ to install unionfs. All
you should need todo, though, if you want to is modprobe unionfs. If
you don't have the unionfs module, you'll need to rebuild your kernel
with that module either available or compiled in directly, but thanks
to Compile Linux, rebuilding a kernel's pretty easy work.
