Say, could I get a status update on this?

Was this mere rumor, or is there actually some analog to the USE flags
in Gobo? If so, does documentation about it exist?
On a related note, I've been thinking optional patches. That is, in
addition to setting "configure" options, use flags would also provide a
facility for applying optional patches.
Consider, as an example, the Elektra project
(http://www.libelektra.org/Main_Page), which attempts to provide a
common registry library to make it easier for developers to manage
configuration data, and to make it easier for users to configure
software. Various people provide patches for popular packages (X,
init, etc.) so that they use Elektra. One might want to have an
elektra use flag which, if detected, would cause Compile to apply a
patch that enables elektra support. Another place where this might be
used is suspend2.
