[gobolinux-users] open office versus OO.o

I think I might weigh in here. Yes OO.o is bloaty (of course as I use
emacs to do everything I guess I shouldn't talk), but I have tried using
Koffice and it falls down in one important area if you are trying to woo
people off M$ Office. Compatibility. This has turned me away from the
lighter alternatives time and time again. Too often I am dealing with
people on Windows, in fact, that is the only reason I ever go near an
office "suite" of any sort as I personally think they are evil.
If I have to talk to Word users I need something that will not only
translate a word document into something legible, but also be able to
convert my changes back to .doc so the other person can read it. In a
live CD you want to have an out of the box useable system, and this
would be one criteria that should be (and is) addressed. If the KOffice
suite manages to handle M$ Office file formats properly, I am the first
person to advocate switching, but until they do, I would suggest leaving
it in there. It was very disappointing as AbiWord (also lightweight)
has a hidden emacs bindings setting.
Btw. I have searched long and hard for a way to be able to read and
write Excel sheets in emacs, so you can see how much OO.o would be
against all I believe in. :-)
