It's probably not all that bad. Linux has been running on 64-bit
systems since 1995, and it's even getting to be pretty common these
days with amd64 and em64t hardware being found in desktops and
laptops.

If so then someone else has probably already done them. SuSE, Red
Hat, Ubuntu, and others are readily available for 64-bit systems. If
you're worried about a specific package, you can always take a look at
their source packages and see what patches they include.
One case I do know of is the Xorg server, which has a small bug that
can cause trouble with compiz and Xgl on amd64. It's supposedly fixed
in the lastest release.
