I believe you can convert the font using a program called Xmbdfed -- I
did that long ago; it took some trial-and-error to get the conversion
right, but I don't have the X-compatible copy of the font with me
anymore. If anybody still has it (I believe it was shipped in some old
Gobo version even) I'd like to get a copy. :)

I did get Garnome to build long ago (except for a few components like
GnomeMeeting, which I suspect were actually broken at the time).
Haven't tried with the latest docbook packages, but I remember hearing
reports that the docbook packages worked. Maybe there's an option in
Garnome to disable building the documentation?
