Haven't looked recently but, udev works fine on an actually install.
There's some problem writing nodes on the livecd (which is odd sense
everything is writable using unionfs).  Moving the livecd to
BootScripts would probably help a lot.  Cleaning up mounting proc,
sys, tmpfs would help too.

WRT kernel, Stick with a 2.6.15.x until a unionfs 1.2 release.
