"mdadm --create /dev/md/0 ..." should create the device.  It doesn't have to 
exist before running mdadm.  Just make sure that /dev/md/ exists before you 
run mdadm.

	mkdir /dev/md
	mdadm --create /dev/md/0 --level=1 ...
