That works... usually. The worry is that the original website may
suddenly go down and take the source with it, at which point we would
no longer be able to distribute the binary package until someone found
a copy of the source somewhere else.

I think a good solution would be to have one of the devs archive a
copy of the source corresponding to each GPLed package somewhere, but
only make it available for download in the unlikely event that the
other public download locations for that code all disappear. It
shouldn't be hard to integrate that step into the process of
generating official packages, and there's no need to do it for
Contrib. Someone does have access to a server with tons of HD space,

It just needs to be a backup plan, nothing fancy or automatic, since
Compile does the job under normal circumstances.
