I hope someone else can help you with the xfce issues (I'm a bit
swamped on other work right now), but this bit jumped to my eyes.

At what point do the rc's get a black screen? You don't even see the
bootloader image? (GoboLinux logo on white background) If it passes
that point, do you get to see any scrolling text during boot?
