I'd recommend you to start by copying the entire distribution to a
separate directory. Then look at kernel modules you're not going to
need, and remove them from System/Kernel/Modules. After that, take a
look at your Programs directory, and see what you're not going to
need. These are probably things like AbsTK, Aspell, Autoconf,
Automake, BC, Bin86, Bison, CDRDAO, CDRTools, CUPS, Cdparanoia, and so
on.
I'd really recommend you to compile Busybox too, which should replace
a _lot_ of tools. I've a small setup here that simply has the
following programs: BusyBox, Glibc, GoboHide, Grub, JPEG, LibPNG,
OpenSSH, OpenSSL, TinyScripts and ZLib. Based on this small base, you
can easily add further programs such as Xorg, GTK+/Qt, a window
manager, an internet browser, a image manipulation program, and so on.
Some weeks ago I prepared a tiny Gobo system to be able to run LMbench
in a few computers. Besides the fact that it's based on Glibc 2.3.6,
you may find it easier to use it as a quickstart. The ISO is available
here:

This tiny setup has been entirely generated by the Bootstrap tool,
documented here:

Good luck,
