You could do it in qemu. It will be a little slower, but you won't
have that much stuff to compile, and for the later part you have a
bootable system on the USB stick you can use.

If you have room left, you can put qemu on the drive and have your
system both be bootable and runnable within Windows. It's a big chunk
of space out of 256MB, though.
