After the "modprobe 8139cp" what does "dmesg" say?  Also try "ifconfig
-a" to see if you have a eth0 device.  Assuming you're using dhcp, run
"dhcpcd eth0".  Could also try specifying the IP by hand with ifconfig
too.

BTW, which install method did you use?
