Yes and when I get my system back I will install it and use it and just use
Manager to list the installed stuff & the command line tools to do the work for
the time being!

Agreed!

Just about to try Carlo's suggested fixes to recover my system, but I may then
anyway do a clean install & start again using the knowledge I now have about how
things work & hopefully the system wont break again!!

I know it takes time, but a howto document detailing these system management
scripts, what they do and how and when to use them could be a good idea! They
may be intuitively named for the main part (although I would not have latched on
to Freshen as the script to use for updating), but some guidance would be
useful! Ny first impression was that manager hid the nitty gritty for the
occasional user by using them behind the scenes and leaving only the expert
needing to check the details of options and parameters, but it seems now that is
not the case and I need some guidance on using them to keep my system clean & up
to date.

Tom
