Hi,
Due to an error in the package and my lack of understanding concerning the
update tools my migration to the 2.6.20.4 kernel has been fraught with
difficulties most of which have now been sorted out by people on this list!
I can now boot into 2.6.20.4 and get a desktop, but I have a couple of
problems:
1) I see a meesage stating that Udev failed to start, but the messages that
may indicate the problem scroll out of the small display window far too fast
to take note of what is happening! Is there some command I can enter to
check the status of Udev and what problems it is encountering during boot? I
believe it is running, but I don't know how to check!
2) I Have only just realised that I have been running without a swap
partition since I moved to 2.6.20.4! It only came to light when Compile kept
crashing my window manager and running Compile from a console outside of X
came up with a memory allocation failure!
At that time swapon -a failed to turn on the partition although it was
present and as far as I knew configured ok!
I had to use mkswap to rebuild the partition in my case ?System/Devices/hda2
and then swapon -a mounted it!
However it is still not being mounted on boot although a swapon -a in a root
Konsole enables it!
Thre is an entry for it in Fstab which looks ok and the Bootup script
contains the Exec swapon -a although it is immediatly after the Udev start
command so is maybe being affected by the other problem!
What can I do to sort out these remaining problems?
Thanks
Tom Connell
