I had the exact same problem with VMPlayer. The (temporary) solution is to
re-install grub. Unfortunately, you can't do this from the LiveCD, I tried.
Grub is available, but the following steps don't work with it. I had to use a
different LiveCD image to get it to work. What you need to do is run grub
from the console and enter these lines:
: root (hd0,0)
: setup --prefix=/System/Kernel/Boot/grub (hd0,0)
: quit
(Assuming that your virtual hard drive is 0,0; unless you're doing something
different in VMWare, it probably is.)

Amen from this corner.

Pick a nice wallpaper from kde-look.org. Problem solved. If we
must "brand" it, add a little logo in the bottom corner.

A contest would be nice, but I don't think there's any artists around. I'd
be happy to be proven wrong, however.
I'd also like to see a better Kicker layout, rather than the vanilla
default. I still cringe at the LCD clock and the height of the bar; IMO, it
would look better to divide the height in two, and split that between the top
and the bottom (like what GNOME does). Or keep it to one panel, but reduce
the height.

I didn't install it, just visited their website, but it doesn't look like
they've done a lot besides changing the wallpaper and reducing the number of
virtual desktops to two. What else did I miss?
