If it's any consolation, I had error messages from
fontconfig as well. No squares for characters except
in ghostscript (sometimes). My problem was partially
resolved by looking at the files/directories mentioned
and checking the permissions... it looks like running
sudo sometimes takes over users' permissions on those
font config files?

My root account still gives that error, though.

Another thing to look into if you're seeing those
squares is if your xorg.conf has any wildcards in the
font paths. Xorg seems to have silently dropped
support for font path wildcards in the latest version.

Good luck with it...

BTW, since it seems like a number of people have had
this problem, could it be looked into before 014 so
that it doesn't recur? According to fonts.conf,
"DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE.
IT WILL BE REPLACED WHEN FONTCONFIG IS UPDATED.
LOCAL CHANGES BELONG IN 'local.conf'."

So maybe fontconfig should be patched to emit proper
Gobo directories, or include a local.conf with the
package?
