Rather later than 0.10 ;-) I first started using it in earnest in
2001, with the brand new kernel 2.4, in Mandrake Linux. I'd played
with it slightly earlier than that, but since I only had dialup and a
winmodem, I wasn't able to download software. Sometime in 2002 I
built Linux from Scratch over a period of two weeks; I really enjoyed
the resulting OS, but I didn't bother keeping it updated without
automatic tools, so after a few months it felt obsolete and I switched
to Slackware, then Gentoo. Sometime in 2003 I joined the FSF and
started doing web work for RMS, but eventually didn't have the time
anymore. In 2004 I found Gobo. I'd been looking at GNU Stow and
trying to figure out how to improve it for a while, so finding that
Gobo had already done exactly that was terrific.
I did just obtain a copy of Tanenbaum's Operating Systems Design &
Implementation with the Minix source code, which I'm pretty excited
about.
