My first encounter with Linux was back in late 1996, when a friend boasted
that he had just recompiled his kernel to include sound support while drunk.
As I recall, he ran xearth on his desktop. In late 1997, I tried and failed
to get Linux installed on my laptop (which was already about five years old
at the time, so I wasn't surprised). Finally, when I bought a new laptop in
February of 1999, I successfully installed RH 5.2 with kernel 2.0.something.
Ah, those early days. :) I remember compiling and recompiling
Enlightenment, which I ran for about a year and a half (although I flirted
briefly with Afterstep, FVWM95, and even GNOME, among others). I switched
over to KDE sometime in late 2000 (when KDE 2.0 was released), and haven't
had a reason to change since.
