Not sure I ever did.  Linux has always been a means to an end for me,
enabling me to run other free software and fix hardware for myself if
necessary, as in

I'd drop it for Hurd like a shot, as Hurd looks easier to bugfix
without rebuilding/rebooting the whole system.
