the gentoo web site has a lot of tips on editing your
xorg.conf (in /Programs/Xorg/Settings/X11/xorg.conf)
to work with a mouse.
also try googling the mouse model and xorg.conf

if you have a Nvidia video card and are using the
nvidia drivers try using
Modes  "nvidia-auto-select" like in the following
section:

	SubSection "Display"
		Depth     24
		Modes		"nvidia-auto-select"
	EndSubSection

is it a Viewsonic by any chance?
again, google the model and xorg.conf, you'll likely
find settings from someone who got it to work.
