Hi Jonas,

Thanks for the replies. I have literally spent days looking around
the internet trying to fix this problem and have pretty much lost hope,
which is why I'm posting. I've tried kbuildsycoca --noincremental and
sudo kbuildsycoca --global and various other combinations. They return
something like this:

------------
kbuildsycoca running...
kio (KService*): WARNING: Invalid Service :
/System/Links/Shared/applications/GoboLinux.desktop
kio (KSycoca): ERROR: No database available!
kbuildsycoca: WARNING:
'/System/Links/Shared/applications/kde/amarok.desktop' specifies
undefined mimetype/servicetype 'application/asx'
kbuildsycoca: WARNING:
'/System/Links/Shared/applications/kde/amarok.desktop' specifies
undefined mimetype/servicetype 'audio/midi'
kbuildsycoca: WARNING:
'/System/Links/Shared/applications/kde/amarok.desktop' specifies
undefined mimetype/servicetype 'audio/x-aac'
kbuildsycoca: WARNING:
'/System/Links/Shared/applications/kde/amarok.desktop' specifies
undefined mimetype/servicetype 'audio/x-m4a'
kbuildsycoca: WARNING: 'kcertpart.desktop' specifies undefined
mimetype/servicetype 'application/binary-certificate'
kbuildsycoca: WARNING: 'katepart.desktop' specifies undefined
mimetype/servicetype 'text/x-fortran'
kbuildsycoca: WARNING: 'knotify.desktop' specifies undefined
mimetype/servicetype 'KNotify'
------------

X runs as root. KDE and everything else seems to be running as my
user, which I imagine is normal. If I remove
/System/Links/Shared/Trash, KDE complains about not being able to create
it, which sounds about right. It ought to be looking in the user's home
directory though. Mystifying!

Paul
