[gobolinux-users] Configuring CUPS ?
Hi There

I can't figure out how to get CUPS (or any form of
printing) working on my gobo install.
I tried configuring cups from the KDE printer menu,
but that gave an error, looks like the daemon isn't
running, OK, I checked packages on Manager, installed
the latest (1.2.7), then tried to start cups.
Whenever I attempt to start cups from a root shell
"/Programs/CUPS/1.2.7/cups start" I get:
Child exited with status 1!
cups: unable to start scheduler.
The cups faq says to start the daemon from a root
shell if you're getting exit status 1. I was doing
that, still got the message. Reading through prior
threads here, I checked SystemGroup, it's already
set to root, and CUPS seems to be installed owned by
user "root" and group "root", so that looks right.
I also tried setting ServerBin to
/System/Links/Libraries/cups as suggested in another
message, set or unset I get the same error.
I thought maybe the error was caused by the printer
not being visible so I ran "modprobe usblp" to get a
/dev/usb/lp0 entry, still no go.
Another message reported success just using a shell
script as lpr and using ghostscript to print, so I
copied the script, changed settings appropriately,
ran DisableProgram on CUPS, symlinked the lpr script
in as /bin/lpr, and i can't get that working either.
KDE doesn't seem to like having a shell script as lpr
when setting the Print control to "LPR/LPRng Print
System", and it looks like maybe some other config
files are necessary?
So has anyone else gotten printing working on Gobo?
There must be some common steps necessary to get
CUPS working, anyone care to share? This would be a
great entry for the wiki...
Thanks!
