NewVersion on a critical package containing patches such as the kernel
may be a bit dangerous (just keep a live-CD handy in case the old
patches affect the new version rendering the kernel unbootable).

None of our kernel patches are strictly needed for getting a working
kernel, so yes, you could remove from the recipe any patches that
don't apply cleanly until Lucas releases an updated version.
