Might I also use this opportunity to plug Bazaar (bzr).

It shares all the advantages of git that you mentioned above, has great
tools available, and is _really_ easy to pick up. I mean, even I can use
it. :-P

Bazaar is the SCM used on Launchpad <http://launchpad.net/> and Ubuntu,
and GoboLinux could even use Launchpad's free bzr hosting.
