[gobolinux-users] cannot shutdown the machine
Hi There

I seem to be having the same problem as Viola...
Updating to udev-110 gave a ton of errors at startup
and wouldn't start KDE, so I downgraded back to
udev-105-r5. Now have Jonas' fix installed with
110-r2, but I get a lot of errors at startup like
"lib/udev/rundevd failed".
I'm not sure exactly what they say because they scroll
by so quickly. Does anyone know where a log of the
messages displayed at startup is kept?
Now KDE is starting ok, but I have the same problem as
with udev-105-r5, can't shutdown from GUI or root
shell (trying to do so freezes all interactive root
processes), but sudo shutdown works.
HAL isn't listed by ps, and I get this error when
starting it:
root at homecomputer /]StartTask HAL
StartTask: HAL: Returned code 1 => FAILED.
Tried to Compile HAL to update to update to 0.5.9-r1,
but it fails every time at the step:
checking for intltool >= 0.22... 0.35.5 found
checking for perl... /System/Links/Executables/perl
checking for XML::Parser... configure: error:
XML::Parser perl module is required for intltool
PrepareProgram: configure failed.
Compile: Preparation step failed.
I have Perl-XML-Parser 2.34-r3 installed, and have
unlinked, relinked, re-InstallPackaged it, etc. still
isn't detected by this recipe.
Also noteworthy, it gives this error at the beginning
of the Compile process:
Compile: Unpacking file
/Files/Compile/Archives/hal-0.5.9.tar.gz...
Compile: Adding user haldaemon
useradd: invalid numeric argument 'haldaemon'
I currently have HAL 0.5.8.1-r3 installed.
Any suggestions?
