Or a broken /etc/ld.so.cache , which is fixed by running ldconfig.  This
happened to me too.  I was using Freshen to update Xorg via Compile, it
asked me what to do with /etc/ld.so.cache, which was described as
updated settings. I said to use new, Xorg compile went on for a while
and then got interrupted by accident (similar to if I had pressed
control-C, I think).  Freshen (or some process called by it) then went
and updated all the settings (I think it said it was doing that,
anyway).  Afterwards, my /etc/ld.so.cache was an empty file, so
everything (dynamic) was broken until I managed to run ldconfig.
