It would be nice if there were a standard way to document the rationale
for adding each patch (beyond the filename of the patch), maybe a source
URL, which might have updates, or point to somewhere on the GoboLinux
wiki etc... so questions like this are easier for anyone to answer.  For
example there are a few other patches on Linux... and while I personally
have a fairly good idea why gobohide (important for gobo filesystem
appearance feature), unionfs (used for some compiles and generally quite
good) and squashfs (used by livecd's, and also generally quite good), I
don't have any idea about the utf8 patch either (looking in it, the diff
was made on some 2.6.20 and I can't tell what the point of the several
code changes are).
