Either way, it might be desirable to preserve the file's names, or at
least their extensions, so programs dealing with them don't get confused.

hmm... we don't really want the program's name to confuse the sorting,
and I don't suppose we really want to duplicate the file name either
(not sure either is much of a problem though)
