There was support for having /Programs contain symlinks to other
partitions.  Check the archives for $goboInstall.  It may have
suffered from bit rot over the years.  I was using it to share
/Programs across NFS.  As disks became cheaper it became less
interesting to me.

Regarding disk layouts, here's what I have:
/                  sda1
/Depot       a LVM group
/Users       another LVM group

My / has a /Users/root.  It is just minimal and used if /Users isn't
mounted for some reason.  It works fine for me because I don't keep
anything in root's home.
