My personal experience, formerly with a number of forums, recently with
mailing lists administered by Mailman, is that the mailing lists are
easier for me to use.
On a technical note: Forums usually manage features like showing which
posts you've read themselves - their own software implementation.
Versus the e-mail client can have all the messages, let you mark some
messages important or uninteresting, etc... all the bugs and features of
the e-mail client, which each user chooses to their tastes (modulo
what's been implemented, as always). Web interfaces (forums) are
usually not so easy to customize. One big difference, I think, is the
speed: using forums usually involves repeated requests to the internet
forum server (followed by rendering the forum page, which is all too
often complicated and filled with animated images).
Maybe there's some excellent forum software out there that I haven't
seen yet... would Thunderbird (IceDove!) (or another software that I'd
be willing to switch to) let me read (and preferably respond to) new
posts to forums in the same interface as mailing lists? (I do a lot more
reading than responding so it's mostly the reading that should be
efficient, I guess)
