No, it's not; neither brilliant nor intenteded to follow mail-lists.
Personally I hope people stop using gmail (or just learn how to use
e-mail properly) because it teaches people bad habbits, like creating
a reply a message by creating a new message, which breaks threading
in all clients except gmail's "smart" threading. Gmail also teaches
top-posting, as people will see the messages replied to above the
reply, which is only true for gmail.

I don't see how this is better then the gmail interface. The discussions
are still flat and replies are unstructured.

And so can gmane. I haven't used google groups, only read them and I
can't find in what way it's more advanced than gmane. Can you enlighten
me?
