As a partial follow-up: upgrading just HAL and HAL-Info, leaving KDE
at 3.5.7, lets KDM and KDE start correctly. However, the same freeze
seems to occur on "End session" (but not "Turn off computer").

It also changes my keyboard mappings radically - arrows,
home/end/pgup/pgdn/ins/del, and modifiers all have their keycodes
switched around. A very long xmodmap script fixed most of that up, but
a few problems remained in odd places, which makes me think the
problem is in the interaction with Xorg somewhere. I've rolled back to
old HAL after being unable to resolve them.

Examples of those problems: Ctrl-Right generated the same keycode as
bare Right, but no keysym; Alt-Up did the same (both of these were
fixed in xev by repeating the keysym in the shift slot, but only
Ctrl-Right worked in KDE); binding mod4+arrow in KDE would not
function in use, but would be detected properly in the keybinding
dialog.
