--> upgraded to ALSA-Lib and -Utils 1.0.15, with no immediate effect.
--> installed aumix, saw volume at 0, changed to 50, was able to hear sound!
Even after rebooting, I still get that "no soundcards found" in dmesg. I
guess it doesn't mean anything.
The volume-change isn't persistent across reboots for me. Maybe I'll
put aumix -v 50 in /etc/BootScripts/BootUp. (After all, I think I would
rather configure my sound in a file than have it be implicitly
persistent over reboot in a file somewhere)
odd that aumix is such an old program (looks like last release is 5
years ago), but seems to work better than anything "official" I know about
