If you are ever going to look into other distribution methods, I would
suggest looking at flash drives. Have a 500~MB drive? Just put the
core package on it. Have a 2GB drive? Add all the packages you could
ever need on it. With flash drives you can scale how much you put on
them, and you can change it easily and infinitely.
The best solution in my view would be to have a program that would
keep track of packages you have stored on the pen drive, and let you
update only the ones that have changed. Just format the pen drive, put
the package manager on it (A version for windows and linux), and run
it and it would load everything you need to install onto the the pen
drive.
Kinda like the package manager, except for installation purposes. Not
only would this help people with bad or infrequent internet
connections, but would most likely reduce some bandwidth usage, as you
are not re-downloading stuff you already have. (or you could say that
if you know something will work, you set the manager to download
directly from the source site)
Just something to think about.
