acpid responds to ACPI events FROM the kernel (ie lid closed/open).
It shouldn't affect suspending at all.

The current preferred way to suspend is to issue a "echo -n mem
>/sys/power/state".  You may need to remove some modules before and re
modprobe them after.  It depends whether the modules are suspend safe
or not.  You may also need to run vbetool to rePOST your video bios.
vbetool also has some additional options to save state as well.  Good
