I'm wondering here if can't this problem be related to the default KDE
fonts we're using? Can you try to switch fonts and see if it works? Go
to the "K" menu and open the Control Center, and then open "Appearance
& Themes" and select "Fonts".

You might want to remove ~/.kde and ~/.kderc as well, and see if that
helps (do that from outside Xorg, and then launch startx and
reconfigure KDE with the wizard's help).

Does it work in the LiveCD environment, right after you configure the language?
