I did just this on another MediaWiki installation that I support.

Unfortunately, at least some spammers automatically register, so the
benefit was minimal to nonexistent.

I then, at the request of the wiki users, installed reCaptcha.  I do
not have any meaningful feedback from the users as to whether or not
reCaptcha is working.  (Perhaps silence is golden?)

ReCaptcha (by default) challenges you (a) when you register or (b)
when you post anonymously.  In other words, edits by registered users
are not challenged.
