It simply depends on how developers choose to implements their package
installation procedure.
Anyway, the new hplip package provide a whole set of options to play
with to configure the installation paths, so you can try them instead of
using the patch, which is also not that little.
I've done a new recipe, which seems to install things properly,
following the gobo paths, but I can't get the gui to work (it complains
about the gui build process to be specified at configure time, while I
actually specified it, dunno). Attached's the recipe, play with it and
improve it :D
I abandoned it cause I only needed the hpijs drivers, which one can
install by specifying the --only-build-hpjs configure option or something.

P.S.: the variables added in the make_variables array seem to be needed
for the udev rules and .conf file to be correctly copied over, although
the --sysconfdir path is avaiable and used by Compile.
