Union mounts are widely supported, particularly when you're building
your own platform and have absolute certainty about it. You almost
certainly want to include FUSE in your kernel all the time, at least,
so you can use one of those implementations if nothing else. They
aren't related to ViewFS. ViewFS was an alternative to actual union
mounts, as the message you linked says. It never got into a fully
workable state so far though.
